EU ministers to discuss the television directive

10.11.2006
Ministry of Transport and Communications

The EU ministers responsible for audiovisual affairs will convene in Brussels on 13 November to discuss a draft directive concerning television broadcasting activities.

Audiovisual matters in the EU feature on the agenda of the Education, Youth and Culture Council. Discussions about the television directive will be held under the presidency of Ms Susanna Huovinen, Minister of Transport and Communications of Finland.

It is Finland’s aim, as the country holding the EU Presidency, to agree a general approach to the draft directive about audiovisual services.

Finland will propose a compromise that offers solutions concerning four major issues: scope, jurisdiction, product placement and quantitative advertising rules.

The new directive would update the legal provisions with regard to technological development, and promote European content provision.
